Steven Birenbaum is a creative thinker and gifted writer and editor who brings a humanistic approach to complex policy problems. Prior to joining SCP as a Senior Advisor, he served for nearly 18 years as a Senior Communications Officer at the California Health Care Foundation, a non-partisan philanthropy, where he pioneered the use of storytelling and led the Foundation’s multimillion dollar grantmaking in health care journalism and podcasting.
Previously, Steven was Executive Writer at Blue Shield of California. His writing has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, KQED Radio, Health Affairs, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review. Steven holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. He loves to listen to podcasts, bike, hike, play tennis, and go on eating adventures with his wife and two young adult daughters.
